Robot vacuums promised hands-free cleaning. The reality is messier

PCWorld

PCWorld reveals that robot vacuums require regular maintenance and human intervention despite being marketed as fully autonomous cleaning devices. While these devices excel at surface dust and daily cleaning tasks, they struggle with deep-seated pet hair, larger debris, and need consistent emptying and care. Advanced models with LiDAR mapping and scheduling features offer better navigation than cheaper alternatives, but even premium options cannot replace traditional vacuums for thorough cleaning. Years ago, I owned a robot vacuum named Gerald. After a catastrophic tumble down the stairs, I retired him early and have stuck with traditional vacuuming ever since. But after spending more time with them lately and chatting with the experts that make them, I realized I've been holding onto a lot of misconceptions, especially about how "smart" these things actually are in real homes with clutter and pets. I used to think suction power was everything.

Best Robot Vacuum of 2026: Shark, Eufy

WIRED

I've recently introduced a few friends to the power of a great robot vacuum. One of my friends calls hers a marriage saver, while the other was both thrilled and horrified by how many stains the vacuum's AI found on her floors. Personally, my robot vacuums keep me from wanting to set the litter box on fire, since my cat is on a mission to create his own navigational trail of litter through my home. The best robot vacuums these days aren't just vacuuming your floors, nor are they blindly bumping around your house like they used to. These gadgets are mopping, scrubbing away stains, lifting themselves off of obstacles, and even reminding you to clean the dirtier areas in your home more frequently. A good robot vacuum can cost a pretty penny, but it doesn't have to, depending on what you're looking for. I've been testing every new robot vacuum I can in my three-story home filled with three adults, a preschooler, and a cat who's on a mission to get litter all over the house.

iRobot Promo Code: 15% Off

Save on iRobot products, including robot vacuums and mops designed to handle pet hair, daily messes, and hands-free cleaning with smart home integration. The brand iRobot launched the first Roomba robot vacuum back in 2002, and popularity for the handy devices skyrocketed from there. Countless competitors have emerged, but Roomba is still going strong. Its latest models have all the new features we love, from doubling as a vacuum and a mop to fantastic navigation and suction. The Roomba Max 705 is currently keeping my house clean as I test it for our robot vacuum guide, and it's doing a great job both mopping and vacuuming the floors in my massive second story.

Roborock Qrevo Curv 2 Flow Review: The Most Beautiful, Best Robot Vacuum

WIRED

Dirt detect and customizable cleaning solutions. SmartPlan AI still doesn't identify smaller objects. Roborock's Curv robot vacuum is probably the most attractive robot vacuum I've ever tested. The domed white docking station is attractive, convenient, and compact. It doesn't hurt that Roborock's navigation and cleaning systems are consistently the best among the robot vacuums I've tested.

The robots we saw at CES 2026: The lovable, the creepy and the utterly confusing

Engadget

CES always has its share of attention-grabbing robots. But this year in particular seemed to be a landmark year for robotics. The advancement in AI technology has not only given robots better "brains," it's enabled new levels of autonomy and given rise to an ambitious, if sometimes questionable, vision for our robot-filled future. From sassy humanoids to AI-powered pets and chore-handling assistants, we sought out as many cute, strange and capable robots as we could find in Las Vegas. These are the ones that made the biggest impression.

Dreame's robot vacuum with an arm is back at CES 2026 and it can do more than pick up shoes

Engadget

Dreame's robot vacuum with an arm is back at CES 2026 and it can do more than pick up shoes The Cyber 10 Ultra has its own attachments for reaching hard-to-get places. Dreame's Cyber10 Ultra has an arm that can grab objects and clean hard to reach areas. Last year at CES, Dreame showed off a robot vacuum prototype with a mechanical arm . But while we were able to see the arm extend and retract, we didn't see the device, which was described as a prototype at the time, actually grab anything, which was a bit disappointing. This year, though, the company has made its arm-enabled vacuum a reality with the Cyber 10 Ultra.
